Rochester Music Hall of Fame

“Without music, life would be a mistake.”  -Friedrich Nietzsche

 Greetings Friends :)

I recently had the privilege of documenting the inaugural induction ceremony of the Rochester Music Hall of Fame at Eastman Theater in Downtown Rochester.  It was a thrill to witness and participate in the creative process with inductees that included Chuck Mangione, Gene Cornish (of the Rascals), Charles Strouse, Joe English (of Wings), Jeff Tyzik, Doriot Anthony Dwyer and Cab Calloway – who’s daughter, Chris Calloway, performed a ripping version of Minnie the Mooch!  What an amazing night it was…a ‘pinch me’ kind of experience.

This last one I call ‘the embrace’.  Gap and Chuck Mangione have been playing music together their entire lives.  They started here in Rochester in 1958 as The Jazz Brothers and toured the World over in the 70’s and 80’s as one of the biggest acts in all of Jazz.  It was beyond special to share in this moment of recognition of two brothers who have done so much and come so far.

Thank you for inviting me along to document this occasion Gap.  I cherish the friendship that we share.

…and thank you all for stopping by.  More visual:ramblings coming soon!

3rd Wheel Session : Judy & Michael

Hello Friends :)

I hope that this finds you all so so well…fast on the heels of an unforgettable summer.

The following are images gathered from a recent 3rd Wheel Session in Lilac-filled Highland Park in Rochester, NY. Encapsulated in a scene that epitomizes the dawn of summer – Judy, Michael and myself found trees to climb, magnolia leaves to dream beneath and plenty space to slow down, breath deep and take it all in. Thank you both for trusting in a process that was not clearly defined…it was an honor to witness the connection that you share.  In my estimation these images are the embodiment of the 3rd Wheel Session…they feel more than they look and scream loud without saying a word.

Dear friends and readers:  In a few days I am going to be reaching out to initiate momentum on a personal project that has stemmed from my strong affinity towards sessions similar to the one featured above.  In addition to asking for participants, I will be taking suggestions for a potential re-naming effort of the 3rd Wheel Session.  Inasmuch as the name has served, I believe it is time to give these sessions a name worthy of their purpose.  I hope that you will all participate in helping me to realize and establish this new frontier.

Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue : XRIJF ’12

Greetings Dear Friends :)

The 2012 Wedding Season has just wrapped up…I am so excited to share some glimpses of what was.  So.very.wonderful.

Before getting to that though, I wanted to share a few images from my music photography archive.  This year’s Rochester International Jazz Festival was absurdly amazing.  For those of you who attended, you know what I mean.  If you weren’t there, do not worry, I am sorting the imagery.  I won’t name drop now,,,sit tight.

The 10-day festival wrapped with the massively talented, massively charismatic/energetic Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue – a free show on the Alexander St. stage in front of an estimated 18,000 people.  Working on stage in front in the midst of that many people enthusiastically giving everything that they have back to a core of 7 guys doing their thing 120%…phew…electric.

Check em y’all!

Counting Crows Live : Utica, NY : Saranac Brewery

Greetings Dear Friends :)

I thought that I’d share a few from a recent shoot with one of my all-time favorite bands, The Counting Crows.  What made this experience particularly special was that the show was held as part of Saranac Thursdays @ the FX Matt Brewery – Saranac Brewery – in my hometown of Utica, NY.  I spent a lot of time listening to the Counting Crows during my high school years in Utica.  Flash forward a bit (‘bit’ being an understatement) and voila,,,a nostalgic sorta deja vu.  At any rate it was a perfect summer evening spent amongst old friends set to the sounds of a not-so-distant past.  Adam and the boys killed it!

2012 Wedding Season Review (1st Half)

Greetings Dear Friends :)

Knocked down, dragged out, bowled over, in orbit, somebody please pinch me, overwhelmingly – over the moon – grateful for the people who have graced me with the privilege of  their most special day.  Speechless – or at least struggling to find words – I present a brief review of the smiles, laughter, silence, Eskimo kisses, soul gazes, hand smooches, tears, celebrations and joy that have marked the 1st half of this most spectacular Wedding Season.  I am blessed to feel this close to these beautiful couples.

Special thanks to those who worked beside me…never in front, never behind :  Andrew Jensen, Erich Camping and Kyle Schwab.  You are all invaluable parts of these most precious moments.

CC Sabathia : NY Yankees Poster Night 2012

Greetings Dear Friends :)

They say that 3 is a charm.  …that good things come in 3.

Well this year’s New York Yankee Poster night will mark the 3rd time in 4 years that a photograph of mine will be on display and placed in the hands of thousands of Yankee faithful.  Someone pinch me.  For real…the excitement is overwhelming!  CC Sabathia is this year’s featured Yankee.  The final poster is featured below along with an outtake that I particularly liked.

A million billion kajillion thank you’s to Mike Macchione, Bill Goodspeed and Austin Roesburg of Catch 24 NYC.  Your continued support and unprecedented vision is what makes this possible year after year.  I eagerly look forward to future collaborations gentlemen.

Tony Levin & The Stickmen

Greetings Dear Friends :

I hope that this finds you all well.  I’m making an attempt to get some posts flowing during this very short break in my shooting schedule.  The past months have had me here, there and everywhere shooting concerts, pro sporting events and human connection.  It’s been a thrill, to say the very least :)

I thought that I’d start out with some music.  Although you may not know of Tony Levin by name, you are more than likely familiar with his work.  A prolific session musician since the 1970s, Levin has played on five hundred albums, including those of CherAlice CooperJohn LennonSarah McLachlanStevie NicksPink FloydDire StraitsLou ReedTom WaitsBuddy RichThe RochesTodd RundgrenSealYes and Warren Zevon. Additionally, he has toured with artists including Paul Simon (with whom Tony appeared in Simon’s 1980 filmOne Trick Pony), Gary BurtonJames TaylorHerbie MannJudy CollinsCarly SimonPeter FramptonAnderson Bruford Wakeman HowePeter GabrielTim FinnRichie Sambora, and Claudio Baglioni.  Quite the portfolio, huh??

In addition to Tony’s musical accomplishments, he helped to popularize the Chapman Stick and the NS upright bass.  He also created “funk fingers“, modified drumsticks attached to fingers used to hit the bass guitar strings (which sounds similar to slap style bass).  …and as if that isn’t enough, Tony is also one of the first bloggers, as he began sharing his tour experiences in a diary fashion as early as in 1996, one year before the terms “weblog” and “blog” were coined.

My dear friend Gap Mangione introduced me to Tony a few months back and suggested that I connect with him during a recent stop at the Water Street Music Hall in Rochester.  I did and the rest is history.  Quite a dude…and quite the honor to chat, work and play with this legend.

His current band, the Stickmen consists of Pat Mastelotto (of Mr. Mister fame) on drums and Markus Reuter on the second Chapman Stick.  Their sound is all it’s on…symphonic, edgy and quite often right in your face!  Check ’em out y’all!
